What is Coaching?

Remember that coach you had in sports growing up? They pushed you to achieve your full potential, taught you valuable skills and sport techniques, and helped you understand the importance of commitment. All major star athletes have coaches, no matter how successful they are. Many players, like Tom Brady and Stephen Curry (Golden State still sucks), say their success would not have been possible without the help of their coaches. But who’s to say coaching is only meant for sports? I’m here to tell you why it’s not - and why I believe coaching is becoming a new staple for any and all highly ambitious individuals.

Here’s six things you should know about coaching:

1) 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙪𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙚 𝙛𝙤𝙘𝙪𝙨𝙚𝙙

Unlike therapy which is largely based on healing old wounds, coaching focuses on the present & future. Coaches help clients form concrete, attainable goals, and provide action plans for reaching them. For HAL wellness coaching (and many other programs), this requires an in depth analysis of a client’s present life. Understanding what is currently working & not working allows me to create a plan that bridges the gap between the client’s present and ideal future.

2) 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙣𝙤𝙩 𝙤𝙣𝙚-𝙨𝙞𝙯𝙚 𝙛𝙞𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙡𝙡

Quality coaches don’t tell you what to do, they help you get where you want to be. It’s your life, we’re just helping you live it to the fullest! Like me, many coaches don’t tell you to do a standard x, y, and z. We work with you, on the same team, to help you achieve your ideal life and self. I understand that my clients are living their own lives, in their own bodies, with their own habits, beliefs, and reasons for change. That is why I use a client-centered approach, helping them build individualized solutions that work for them.

3) 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙧𝙚𝙖𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙧𝙚𝙡𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨𝙝𝙞𝙥𝙨

Great coaches really care about their clients! And the coach/client relationship is special. Having a coach is like having a good friend you can talk to about all of your struggles, hopes, and dreams - and that good friend just happens to know how to help you succeed. They hold you accountable, empower you, & guide you with compassion & care.

4). 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙖 𝙨𝙚𝙡𝙛-𝙞𝙣𝙫𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩

It’s almost a no-brainer to invest in many self-improvement services such as an education, straightening our teeth, or a gym membership. But when it comes to our own individual goals, why is it that we often expect ourselves to succeed on our own - without personalized guidance? This is where coaching comes in. We bridge the gap between where you are, and where you want to be. It’s funny, I actually ask many clients to place a value on their dream life after having them lay it out for me. I almost always hear the answer “priceless”. If a coach can help you get there, what are you waiting for?

5). 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙞𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙖𝙣𝙮𝙤𝙣𝙚 (𝙬𝙝𝙤 𝙬𝙖𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙩𝙤 𝙨𝙪𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙚𝙙)

A coach isn’t like a doctor you feel inclined to visit when you’re sick. You don’t have to have a “serious problem” to have a coach, just serious goals. You don’t need to be a business executive or competitive athlete either. All you need is objectives, drive and the courage to ask for guidance. Common goals among my clients include: improved self image, weight loss, effective time management, uplifted mindset / mood, social confidence, increased motivation & productivity, exercise comfortability / enjoyment, improved eating, and a greater overall wellbeing (to name a few). I only ask for a few simple requirements from clients in order to get started - 1). To be open and honest 2). To step outside of their comfort zone, and 3). To be coachable & trust the process.

6). 𝘾𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙥𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙤𝙩𝙚𝙨 𝙨𝙪𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙞𝙣𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙘𝙝𝙖𝙣𝙜𝙚

If you’ve tried fad dieting you may have experienced a “band-aid” solution first-hand. Restrictive diets, fat-burning supplements, & short-term intense fitness programs are just a few examples of these. Such methods promise results, and many individuals see those results come to fruition in a relatively short period of time. The problem is, these “results” are almost always temporary. Have you heard of someone losing 10lbs on some crazy fad diet, only to find themselves gaining the weight right back? Coaching takes a different approach - focusing on long term, sustainable change. We help clients implement realistic, positive modifications to their daily life that help them achieve results in both the short & long term.
